Keys to Success: You Can't Succeed if You Can't Make a Decision

By: Cheryl A. Clausen

Are you a procrastinator? Do you fail more often than you succeed? You have trouble making decisions and that's why you find it so hard to succeed. You can turn this around by developing the habit of making decisions quickly. Right now you think it's hard to make decisions. You find it hard to make decisions because you're focused on information rather than the facts, plus you don't have a specific plan for what you want and how you're going to get it.

Don't change your decisions once they're made. Once you make a decision only change your decision if the facts support that change. And even then change your mind slowly. The reason you change your mind so often and so easily is because you're reacting to fear not facts.

Don't include others in your decision making process. Gather the facts and then make your own decisions. Make sure your decisions are in alignment with your plans. Including others in your decision making process opens yourself up for misinformation, negativity, and jealousy. Gain confidence in your decision making capabilities through practice. Very few decisions can't be undone, so stop being so afraid of making a decision. Develop new decision making habits by making low risk decisions first and then sticking with. After you get your confidence built up move to making the important decisions quickly.

At times you will have to reach out to other people to get the facts you need. Get those facts without sharing why you want them. Until you've already made your decision and taken action you want to keep your thoughts and ideas to yourself.

If you're a talker start becoming a listener and observer. When you do all the talking you miss the opportunities and facts that are right under your nose. Use your eyes and ears to look and listen for the facts and opportunities you need. You can't be focused on finding these opportunities and facts when you're doing all the talking.

Never share your plans with anyone. Show them instead. Sharing your plans before you've taken action on them sets yourself up for a series of negative results including: ridicule if you don't follow through on your plans, the likelihood that someone else will steal your plan and be a direct competitor, and having your thoughts and ideas cluttered with a bunch of information that detracts from your focus.
