Paying Too Much For Food?

By: Rachel Yoshida

Everyone knows that our grocery bills are just not getting any cheaper. The price of food these days can make you wonder how a family that has three or more children can be spending the majority of their paychecks on anything else but groceries. These large families on a budgeted income will tell you that it is becoming more and more difficult to keep enough food on the table each week to keep everyone happy.

Many times the amount of our grocery bill can be a direct result of the products that we choose to buy. We are all probably guilty of not paying nearly enough attention to exactly what it is we put in our carts. While many of us are dieting to lose weight and trying to make sure our kids are getting healthier food that is better for them, we are probably spending more for the food products that we think are helping us accomplish these goals.

Have you ever paid attention to how much more diet foods and healthier foods cost compared to the things that are not supposed to be good for us? If you have not looked closely at the price difference, you should. Why does it cost more for healthy stuff? The reason is that you are probably buying prepackaged, processed items that have to be manufactured differently than normal products. You pay for commercials that advertise these products and you are paying for all that pretty over packaging. You are also probably paying for the research that a food company has to conduct to be able to make the claims that they do about their product.

Any time we buy prepackaged or specialty foods, chances are we are paying too much. We have to realize that we can eat healthy and be calorie conscious without having to buy all the products that say they are better for us. Fresh fruits and vegetables always have been and hopefully always will be the best way to eat healthy. We eat many of them completely in their raw natural state, so the convenience factor should not be an issue. We have unwittingly trained our children to think that if it does not come in a nice box with a cartoon character on it, it can not possibly be good.

If we are paying too much for certain things at the grocery store, some of this added expense may be reduced if we just stop buying the wrong things. If you want to eat smarter, try shopping smarter too. They really will go hand in hand.
